Pitchside presentation with members of Bristol Sands United and City’s Dan Bentley

As part of Mental Health Week Bristol City invited members of Bristol Sands United football programme to Ashton Gate Stadium to be presented with personalised City shirts.

Sands is the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK. Bristol Sands Utd FC is part of the national charity and is a unique way for dads and other bereaved family members to come together through a shared love of sport and find a support network where they can feel at ease talking about their grief when they’re ready.

Bristol Sands United football program is targeted at men who like sport who have suffered pre and antenatal loss to support their mental wellbeing. The teams also commemorate their babies’ all-too-brief lives by proudly displaying their names on the kit worn for every match.

City’s goalkeeper Dan Bentley presented members of Bristol Sands United with 37 personalised shirts donated by the club. The shirts have the names of each members’ lost loved ones printed on the back.

The men shared their experiences with Dan and how being a part of the Sands football program helped them all through difficult times. Dan also discussed his own personal experience and how it impacted his mental health.
