Sam Pearson says he is learning “day in, day out” and benefitting from his first team exposure, after returning to Under-23s action on Tuesday (January 12th).
Pearson scored in a 3-1 win for the young Robins, as they brushed Colchester United Under-23s aside in the Professional Development League fixture at the Optima Stadium.
Zac Smith capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put City ahead, before Louis Britton headed them into a 2-0 lead. Pearson then latched on to a Marlee Francois pass before slotting home the third goal of the afternoon.
The U’s would pull a goal back but it proved just a consolation, while Welsh youth international Pearson almost grabbed a late assist but his cutback was turned on to the post by Smith. It wouldn’t matter as the three points belonged to the home side in a winning start to 2021.
“The boys are buzzing because to get back with a win is good, said Pearson. “I thought we performed well and in that first half we were very good. We were a bit scrappier in the second half and we could have punished them a bit more. Overall we saw the game out.
“Colchester probably wanted it more than we did in the second half. We were 3-0 up so we were in the driving seat and did enough to see it out.
“I’m pleased to score today. I get into good positions but I don’t always finish them as I should so I think I should score and assist a lot more. But I’m glad to be back on the scoresheet today.”
Attacker Pearson has been named on the first team bench five times this season, having earned the call to train with Dean Holden’s squad in recent weeks.
It's an opportunity he described as “a massive bonus” and it has given him an aim to strive for this year.
Pearson continued: “Being with the first team for a while has been really good for me. I’ve practised with Kalifa Cisse on my finishing so I think any situations I can be more deadly in front of goal.
“Being around the first team is a massive bonus for us young boys because we learn day in, day out from them and it shows just how good they are at that level. Hopefully we can push on and be like that.
“I just want to play as many games as I can, perform at the best I possibly can and try to push for the first team. I’d love to make my debut this year but we’ve got to see what happens and keep working hard.”
