Match-winner Jamie Paterson saluted City’s squad spirit as the Robins fought from behind with his 83rd-minute strike to seal a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town.
The attacking midfielder was delighted with the three points – City’s first maximum for a month – which lifts them up to sixth in the Sky Bet Championship ahead of a Friday night test against Cardiff City.
Josh Koroma had put the Terriers in front late in the first half but Jay Dasilva equalised with his first City goal, before the left-back turned provider for Paterson who swept home.
“There’s no doubt about it, this is a massive three points for us,” Paterson told Robins TV straight off the pitch, as he reflected on putting an end to City’s five-game run without a win.
“We have played well in the last few games, we’ve been unfortunate, and it’s taken a real squad effort after Tuesday-Saturday-Wednesday against really good sides.
“To go in 1-0 down showed our spirit, we didn’t panic and it was great to get the goal and a brilliant three points.”
City’s number 10, who came on as a second-half substitute after 67 minutes, said he felt “hungry” to contribute.
“The Gaffer (Dean Holden) told us everyone is involved, everyone is confident,” he said.
“Today I didn’t start but I had the confidence I could come on and change the game and that’s exactly what he predicted. I was happy to get that goal in the end and it was a massive three points…In the last couple of days we worked on being compact and I think it really showed. We came good in the end and killed the game in the last 10 minutes with the goal.”
And Paterson touched on the upcoming Severnside derby in South Wales, with the Robins heading into the final game this side of the second international break of the campaign on the wave of victory.
He continued: “We’ve had a tough run with big injuries, a few niggles here and there but that’s the Championship and there are many games coming up. We have a big game against Cardiff City coming up on Friday night, then the break and if we can go into Friday with confidence and another three points it will be a great start to this season.”
The Robins take on the Bluebirds live on Sky Sports but, because of EFL broadcast rights, the match will not be available to supporters via Robins TV.
Chris Vui and Charles Piutau were in action in the opening round of the Pacific Nations Cup, with Tonga beaten by Fiji and Samoa edging out Australia A.
