With promotion to the First Division (the Championship by today's format) secured, this would be City's promotion party in front of their own fans.
Bristol City 2-1 Walsall
Saturday, April 25th 1998
Second Division
Ashton Gate
Scorers: Owers 3, Tinnion 80 / Tholot 23
Attendance: 15,059
Gary Owers had City off to the perfect start with his downward headed goal - pictured - inside just three minutes, though Walsall did equalise through Didier Tholot who brushed aside the City challenges before firing on goal.
A handball with ten minutes to go presented Brian Tinnion with the chance to restore the Robins' lead, and while the set piece didn't appear to be his best, Walsall keeper James Walker appeared unsighted by Scott Murray, and the ball found its way into the next.
City: Naylor, Locke, Carey, Paterson, Bell, Goodridge (Hewlett), Owers, Doherty, Tinnion, McCarthy, Cramb (Murray).
A supporter's quote taken from the end of season promotion brochure: "I've watched City for 30 years and this has to rank as one of the best. It wasn't a great performance but they have entertained all season and no-one's complaining when we're already up." - Keith Jones, Sandford.
