O’Dowda’s ‘relief’ to be back

Callum O’Dowda made it a comeback to remember, scoring with just his second touch moments after coming off the bench in a 3-0 victory over Birmingham City.

This was O’Dowda’s first involvement with the first team since recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Wycombe on Boxing Day.

City were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Kasey Palmer and Antoine Semenyo before O’Dowda’s appearance off the bench in the 76th minute and pounced immediately at St Andrew’s Stadium.

Pleased and relieved

Returning to the squad on a day to remember, the midfielder told Robins TV: “I’m pleased and it’s a relief as well because it’s been a tough couple of months. I was playing a lot of games week in, week out and then picking up the injury. Boxing Day feels so long ago now so it’s a relief and I’m made up for the lads because I thought we were excellent today.

“We had a gameplan,” O’Dowda continued. “Everyone stuck to that and played their part very well. It’s the little things: the way we were at the back, how we got forward, playing the conditions as we know two teams play on this pitch week in, week out. The boys were excellent, and I’m delighted for Antoine and Kasey.”

Palmer praise

The Republic of Ireland international went into further detail on the impressive Palmer, who was voted supporters’ Man of the Match via the Robins Twitter followers in the same week where City’s No. 45 welcomed his second son into the world.

O’Dowda said: “He was excellent in and out pf possession. Everyone can see the qualities he has and he can do the other side of the game too so I’m really pleased for him.”

Watkins and Walsh

O’Dowda was also joined by the returning Marley Watkins and Liam Walsh – the pair making their first appearances of the season for the Robins and Walsh his first in two years.

They come back into the squad with 10 games remaining in the Sky Bet Championship.

O’Dowda says they will provide a “boost” and “healthy competition” adding they “naturally keep the standards high and that helps going into the back end, the business end of the season.”

Blackburn Rovers up next

City are back in action at Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, March 17th (KO 7.45pm) live on Robins TV.
