Bristol City have secured the permanent signing of Richard O’Donnell for an undisclosed fee from Wigan Athletic.
Previously on loan at Ashton Gate, O’Donnell has now penned a two-and-a-half year deal to seal a long-term switch.
With Frank Fielding injured, the goalkeeper, 27, has made four appearances to date for City – in the process reaching the milestone of his 200th career outing.
O’Donnell began his career at Sheffield Wednesday, from whom he enjoyed loan spells with York City, Rotherham United, Oldham Athletic, Grimsby Town and Macclesfield Town.
In 2012 he joined Chesterfield and played 20 games on loan at Stockport County, before moving to Walsall permanently a year later.
He was a regular for the Saddlers for two years and faced City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final. By the time City hit eight goals past Walsall on the opening day, O’Donnell’s contract was poised to expire and he was left on the sidelines ahead of a move to Wigan Athletic.
Jussi Jaaskelainen’s form at the DW Stadium forced O’Donnell to look elsewhere for first-team opportunities, and that has quickly proved successful at Ashton Gate with his loan becoming permanent on deadline day.
Despite being reduced to 12 men in the closing stages of the match, England U20 held on to beat France 29-20 in round two of the Six Nations Summer Series.
