The Robins took the lead after Cameron Pring slotted Andreas Weimann through on goal, however City’s top goalscorer was denied by Hein but then he showed the presence of mind to square the rebound to Semenyo who lashed home from six yards out.
The Robins began the second half in the same vein as the first - dictating play and looking to exploit the Royals’ left flank. Semenyo and Pring combined in the Reading box and the full-back’s low cross was turned into the net by Michael Morrison.
Reading were awarded a lifeline with 18 minutes to play as Timm Klose was adjudged to have brought down Tom Ince in the City area. John Swift stepped up to dispatch the penalty into bottom corner and bring the Royals within striking range but they were unable to capitalise in the remaining minutes as they headed back to Reading empty-handed.
