‘No better way to kickstart the season’ - Wellings

Bristol City Women's summer signing Charlie Wellings has praised the squad’s togetherness as they build towards their Barclays FAWSL opener at Ashton Gate Stadium.

Wellings joined the City Women ranks back in July and she insists the squad are motivated and excited for their clash against Brighton on the opening weekend of the season

“It’s great to be opening the season at Ashton Gate against Brighton, we’re all excited to kickstart the new season in such a great stadium and we’re all wanting to start the season in the best way possible and get three points.

“I’m really looking forward to the start of the season now, overall the club has recruited really well over the summer and we’ve now got a good balance of experienced players, as well as a strong core of younger players.”

The twenty-two year old has settled into life in Bristol seamlessly and believes the City Women squad have become a tight unit over the hard work they have endured throughout pre-season.

“We’ve come together as a group really well throughout pre-season, we’ve gelled quite quickly with all the new additions and I know we all can’t wait to get going on the opening weekend.

“Since coming in at the start of the summer we have settled in quite comfortably, almost straight away and Tanya has been a massive help, as well as pushing us and getting us ready for the start of the season.”

Since returning to training in July the squad have been put through their paces at the SGS College WISE training ground and Wellings has praised Oxtoby’s methods during the summer months.

“There’s always a lot of running in pre-season and it’s got to be done. Luckily we did a lot of our running work before we came back in, so the majority of pre-season has been working with the ball which I think is great way of doing it, she added.

“I’ve never had a pre-season where I haven’t just been running, so it’s refreshing and helped the team progress and come together on the pitch.”
