New coaches look to provide balance

The arrivals of Keith Downing and Paul Simpson have been hailed as ‘fantastic’ appointments.

The pair have more than 40 years coaching experience between them at all levels of the game.

Downing joins from the Football Association where he led England Under-19s to victory in the 2017 European Championship, while Simpson steered England to victory in the Under 20s World Cup the same year.  

“It’s a fantastic appointment by the club in terms of two experienced assistants, who have recently been in the England system,” said Dean Holden on news of his appointment as City head coach.

“They have great knowledge of players, they are fantastic coaches in their own way with one more defensively minded and the other more on the attacking side so it gives us a nice blend.”

Downing and Simpson will work as assistant head coach’s to Holden with immediate effect, with the players returning for pre-season on Tuesday (August 11th).

Holden continued: “They are two very driven people who have worked on the frontline in the Premier League and they have had two fantastic playing careers behind them so all the experiences comes together.

“I thought that was important for me, considering where I’m at in my career. I’m my own man with my own ideas but it’s important to tap into people’s experiences as well, so I’m very excited by those two appointments.”
