👀 A LOOK BACK: City Women 3-1 Lewes FC Women (Weds, Nov 17th)

City made it two wins from two in the FA Continental group stages with a commanding victory over the Rooks at the Robins High Performance Centre.

Aggie Beever-Jones opened the scoring in the 36th minute with an audacious finish as she curled the ball off the outside of her right boot to pick out the bottom corner and net her second goal in as many games.

Soon after, the Robins doubled their lead. Abi Harrison poked home Melissa Johnson low cross to net her sixth goal in six games and give City a two-goal cushion heading into the break.

The Robins wouldn’t have to wait long for their third. Johnson got in on the scoring act as she latched onto a through ball from Simran Jhamat to slide the ball past Shanell Salgado in the Lewes net.

The visitors would bag a consolation goal in the second half as Heidi Logan managed to get the better of Sophie Whitehouse, however the Robins would comfortably see out the game and claim victory.

🆚 OUR OPPONENTS: Watford Women

  • Formed: 1970
  • Stadium: Orbital Fasterners Stadium
  • Manager: Clinton Lancaster
  • Nickname: Golden Girls, Hornets
  • Finished last season: 1st, FA National League

Watford gained promotion to the FA Championship in the summer of the 2021 after a two-team league expansion was implemented and the Golden Girls’ upward movement application was approved.

This marked their return to the second tier, a feat which was first achieved in the 2012/13 campaign after the Hornets finished runners-up in the FA Women's Premier League, earning a promotion into the previously named FA Women’s Super League 2.

The Golden Girls spent four seasons in the second tier, before a league restructure in 2018/19 saw Watford drop down to the FA National League for three seasons prior to their return to the now named FA Championship.

Clinton Lancaster’s side currently sit 11th in the league table with their last two league results lifting them off the foot of the table and above Coventry United Ladies.

The Hornets’ 2-1 victory over Lewes in early November was followed up with a 1-1 draw against Sunderland Ladies, taking their points total for the season up to five.

👀 ONE TO WATCH

HELEN WARD

The 35-year-old forward is a stalwart of the women’s game and has been plying her trade with the Golden Girls for the last four years.

The Brent-born striker began her career at Watford Ladies, joining at the age of nine and progressing to become captain of the senior side. She departed in the 2009 to join Arsenal, before having stints with both Chelsea and Reading FC.

Ward returned to Watford in 2017 and spent a brief loan-spell at London Bees after the FA National League season was curtailed in 2020/21.

On the international stage, Ward represented England at Youth Level before opting to represent Wales at senior level. The forward is closing in on a century of caps for her country (96), scoring 44 goals.
