LOOKING BACK: Reading 0-1 City (Sun, Oct 15th)

Lauren Smith’s side were last in action in the FA Continental Cup as they travelled to the Select Car Leasing Stadium to take on WSL outfit Reading.

City had the first clear cut opportunity of the match as Ella Powell and Abi Harrison combined on the right-hand side, the forward then picked out her strike partner Melissa Johnson who forced Grace Moloney into a point-blank stop.

The closest the Royals came to finding an opener was through Amalie Eikeland, whose glancing header rebounded off the woodwork.

With the game seemingly set to go to a penalty shootout, up stepped Abi Harrison. The forward had previously threatened from outside the area and this time she was on the money. A dipping right-footed strike beat Moloney to see the Robins claim victory in the dying moments of the game.

🆚 OUR OPPONENTS: Sheffield United

  • Formed: 2002
  • Stadium: Technique Stadium
  • Nickname: The Blades
  • Manager: Neil Redfearn
  • Finished last season: 4th (38 points)

A strong start to the 2021/22 campaign saw the Blades claim nine points from their first four games. Victories against now table-toppers Durham, Coventry United and newly promoted Watford saw Redfearn’s side begin the season with a bang.

A stalemate draw against Crystal Palace was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool at Bramall Lane, which has seen results momentarily stagnate in the league.

Their Conti Cup fixture prior to the break saw the Blades take a point against Championship opponent in Sunderland AFC Ladies, with the Blackcats claiming an extra point after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.

Redfearn’s side is packed with talent and they’ll be travelling to the West Country with the aim of reigniting their league form.

👀 ONE TO WATCH: Lucy Watson

The Blades’ top goal scorer has netted on five occasions so far this campaign.

Watson made her first senior appearance for Sheffield United as a 16-year-old and had to wait until she was 17 to net her first goal for the Blades.

Now a regular in Neil Redfearn’s line-up the youngster is flourishing in the Championship. She faces stiff competition in the goalscoring department at United with the experienced Courntey Sweetman-Kirk sat one goal behind her on four.

The duo’s goalscoring exploits has seen Redfearn’s side find the back of the net three times in each of their three victories this season.
