Lee Johnson says Adam Matthews is “50/50” to be fit as Bristol City bow out of 2016 at Ipswich Town.
The defender was substituted in the second half of the Boxing Day defeat at Wolves, suffering pain in his calf/hamstring area.
Gary O’Neil (calf) is City’s only confirmed absentee at Portman Road.
“Adam Matthews is probably 50/50,” Johnson told Bristol City Player HD. “We’re not quite sure yet what [the injury] is.”
“It could’ve been a knock because he did feel like he had a bit of a knee nudge at the top of the calf and the bottom of the hamstring.
“That’s where the issue lies. If it’s a knock, he could be alright, but if it’s a pull then probably not.”
Johnson has been pleased with the defender’s progress in recent weeks, having started City’s last five matches.
“Previous to Boxing Day I think he’s been good – he’s looked mobile and springy,” the head coach added.
“Maybe his performance on Monday wasn’t as good as in the previous four games, but that’s part of football – you’ll get peaks and troughs. Overall I think we’ve got him back to where he needs to be.”
