Matthews pens new deal

Jas Matthews has put pen to paper on a new deal with Bristol City Women ahead of the 2020/21 Barclays FAWSL season.

The talismanic central defender is currently in her 10th season with City Women and by committing to a new contract, she will equal club captain, Loren Dykes as the longest serving player at Bristol City.

Matthews re-joined the Robins in the summer of 2019 after spending the previous season at fellow Barclays FAWSL side, Liverpool and hasn’t looked back as she has provided a number of stellar performances at the heart of the Bristol City defence.

“Jas has had an incredible season so far and she was a high priority in terms of ensuring we continue to build for next season. She’s a brilliant professional and role model, and someone who sets the standards day-in, day-out”, said Tanya Oxtoby.

“Her performances this season have exceeded all my expectations, in particular her ability to the fundamentals of her role with brilliant consistency has meant she is vital to the success of our group.

“Jas embodies everything Bristol City is about, she has come through our RTC and academy, and has developed into one of the best centre backs in this league. She understands where we’re trying to go as a club moving forward, so it’s fantastic she has committed her future.”

Matthews added: “I’m really happy to have signed a new deal at Bristol City. Ever since returning to the club in the summer it has felt like I’ve come home and I’m grateful for the opportunity to extend my time at the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed working under Tanya and I’m excited to see how much further I can progress under her and the coaches at the club as we look to push the club forward in the coming seasons.”
