Martin recalls Severnside derby goal elation

Bristol City return to the Cardiff City Stadium this weekend seeking a third-consecutive win on Cardiff soil (August 28th, 12.30pm).

The Robins have won both of their last two trips to the Bluebirds, the last coming thanks to Chris Martin’s 96-seconds strike back in November 2020.

The striker finished from Antoine Semenyo’s cutback as City secured all three points in the Severnside derby.

Recalling the moment, Martin told Robins TV: “Elation was the main feeling after scoring that goal early on. We had to hang on after, but I was just delighted.

“It was my first league goal for the club which was a great feeling and to do have done it in the derby made it even more special.

“Derbies mean a lot to the players because we understand the emotions that they bring for fans,” he added, after last year’s derbies were played behind closed doors.

“It’s nice to be a part of that and create special memories. We all feel the buzz in the lead up to a game, that’s always bigger from my experience and it’s a nice challenge, a positive opportunity for us to go down in history at the club.

“If you can score and win that game, or do the double over a rival, it’s always something that will hold that extra something special with the fans," he said.

City will be backed by a 2,400-strong away end with tickets now sold out. Fans without a ticket can stream the game via Robins TV, which is available to both domestic and overseas supporters due to its earlier kick-off time.

Martin continued: “To hear that noise, it’s going to be a great following for us and it’s something we will enjoy – the responsibility of sending the fans home elated after 90 minutes.”

Robins TV coverage starts with the pre-match build-up at 12pm, followed by live video with commentary, analysis and replays.
