🔎 MansionBet Match Preview: Swansea City (H)

We're under the Ashton Gate lights for the first time this season, as Swansea City cross the border for Sky Bet Championship football on Friday night.

Beaten play-off finalists Swansea are still licking their wounds after that Wembley defeat to Brentford back in May. Theyโ€™re without a win from their first three league games but theyโ€™ll have their attentions on putting that early form to bed with some familiar faces set for a BS3 return...

๐Ÿฆข Our opponents

Itโ€™s not been the start to a new season manager Russell Martin would have had in mind. The new boss, having arrived from MK Dons prior to the new campaign, suffered an opening day loss to Blackburn Rovers and since then has overseen one draw and one defeat at home.

There were better fortunes in Round One of the Carabao Cup, as goals from Joel Latibeaudiere, Ben Cabango and Joรซl Piroe secured a 3-0 win to set up a Round Two fixture against Plymouth Argyle.

Itโ€™s going to take time for the new manager to bed in, alongside his staff who also made the move from MK Dons to South Wales. Former Bristol City Under-23s Manager Luke Williams was part of the team to follow Martin, whose possession and passing style were commended as a good fit for the Swans.

Martin was appointed just six days before the start of the new season following the departure in July of Steve Cooper, who had led the Swans to two successive top six finishes during his time in charge.

Heโ€™ll need to dig out results if they are to mount another play-off or promotion bid, and go one step further following Mayโ€™s Wembley disappointment after the 2-0 defeat to Brentford.

As Martin looks to make his mark, he has three former Robins players in his ranks. Jamie Paterson and Liam Walsh signed for the club in the summer, joining Korey Smith who made 40 appearances in his debut season for the Swans after moving across the Severn in 2020.

It remains to be seen if midfielder Walsh will return from injury for Friday nightโ€™s encounter in BS3, but Paterson has featured in all three league games so far which included a goal on his debut. A stalwart for City, Smith remains a doubt for the match at Ashton Gate after suffering a calf injury in the season opener against Blackburn Rovers.

โšฝ๏ธ Watch: Match action v Reading

Andreas Weimann's brace - his first goals of the season - inspired City to their first three points of the campaign on Tuesday night.

His early header and Chris Martin's goal had City 2-0 up inside 15 minutes, before Femi Azeez halved the scores.

Alex Scott set up Weimann's second goal as City restored their two-goal cushion and they held on despite a late strike from Royal captain Liam Moore.

๐Ÿ‘€ ONE TO WATCH

Pato in action for City v Swansea last season

City supporters will know all about the tricky and energetic forward Jamie Paterson.

He spent five seasons with the Robins, having signed from Nottingham Forest in 2016, coincidentally going on to score his first of 26 goals against his former employers in BS3.

Injuries hampered his run of games at times but moments which stand out from his time in red-and-white include a special strike in a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane, a perfect free kick at Millwall and a stunning tight-angle finish at Middlesbrough.

He became a free agent in the summer and completed his signing in South Wales earlier this month, before scoring on his debut.

Bristol City 2-0 Swansea

Championship
Ashton Gate

Goals from Andreas Weimann and Callum O'Dowda helped us on our way to a seventh-consecutive win during the 2018/19 season.

Weimann headed just after the second half had kicked off, while O'Dowda's low finish sealed the points.

There had been large spells of possession from the visitors but Swansea failed to carve out any significant clear-cut chances.
