MansionBet Match Preview: Sheffield United (A) FA Cup

City face Premier League opponents in Sheffield United as they look to progress in the Emirates FA Cup.

In association with City's Principal Partner MansionBet, we take a closer look at the match...

It's a Fifth Round tie with the chance for City to make the quarter-finals for the first time since 1974.

Dean Holden's men have already beaten Portsmouth (2-1) and Millwall (3-0) in the previous rounds to earn their trip to Bramall Lane, where City have not lost in their last three visits.

Watch: A Fourth Round win at the Den

Cup runs always bring a boost, such is the magic of the tournament, and City welcome the challenge in front of them as they look to bounce back amid indifferent league form.

It was a disappointing display against Cardiff City on Saturday which meant three losses in a row for Holden's side, though there were positives for the likes of Joe Williams and Henri Lansbury who made their debuts at Ashton Gate.

They will need time to get their match sharpness up to speed but having the likes of them, as well as other players returning from injury, will be a big boost to the squad in this second half of the season.

Last time out: defeat in the derby

As for the Blades, the 2020/21 campaign looks like it could be one to forget. Chris Wilder's side are bottom of the Premier League table and with just five wins in all competitions - two of those in the FA Cup - since the turn of the calendar year.

That's in contrast to last season when the Blades put together a handful of unbeaten streaks and winning runs to be one of the Premier League's surprise packages, following their promotion in 2018/19.

In terms of their FA Cup run, Wilder has overseen victories against Bristol Rovers (3-2) and Plymouth (2-1) so they do have a winning record against South West sides in the current campaign.

And finally, Wednesday's cup tie will be the first involving VAR in a City match! The system has proved controversial in efforts to get decisions correct by analysing close margins to the absolute finest of details, but it is in place to determine clear and obvious errors in the following four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity.

Sky Bet Championship

A hat-trick from Andreas Weimann inspired the Robins to an emphatic 3-2 win in an exciting Sky Bet Championship encounter against Sheffield United.

The Robins twice fought from behind thanks to the on-target Austrian, with Blades captain Billy Sharp heading the hosts into an early lead at the sun-soaked Bramall Lane.

Weimann levelled the tie with a looping header and Josh Brownhill’s second-half free kick struck the post before Scott Hogan restored the Blades’ lead.

However, City were level again when Kasey Palmer picked out the run of Weimann and the forward completed the scores with a calm finish seven minutes from the end of regular time.
