MansionBet Match Preview: Portsmouth (H)

City return from Loughborough University in time to face Portsmouth in a pre-season fixture at the Robins High Performance Centre.

How to watch on Robins TV

City drew 0-0 with Celtic last week, despite hitting the post and after their warm-weather training camp up the M1 they now get set for more competitive minutes under the belt.

There would be no return to the League One play-offs for Pompey last season, who finished the campaign two points off sixth-placed Oxford United. It was a feat they achieved the previous two seasons, but in 2019/20 the U’s pipped them to a place at Wembley beating Pompey 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 score at the end of both legs.

Pompey have been seeking their return to the Championship since 2012 but back-to-back relegations saw them endure a five-season spell in League Two. They were promoted back to League One for the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

Promotion at the end of the 2016/17 campaign came in the form of League Two champions, the club’s last championship title, though silverware followed two seasons later when they lifted the EFL Trophy. They were runners-up in that tournament a year later.

Head Coach Danny Cowley only took charge in March and has  won half of his competitive games to date, as he led the team close to a third-successive play-off challenge last term. He adds some Championship experience after his 2019/20 spell with Huddersfield, while he has tasted success throughout the lower divisions of English football, with Concord Rangers and Lincoln City.

Off the pitch, Portsmouth have announced work is set to start on a revamp of Fratton Park, with improvements for the south and north stands and the Milton End.

Owner Steve Lansdown and President Marina Dolman officially opened the Robins High Performance Centre ahead of kick-off v Celtic

City return to the HPC after five days at Loughborough University, where the players were put through their paces as temperatures soared.

The players were put through drills on the pitches, gruelling high-speed runs, pumped iron in the gym and pool work.

Now Manager Nigel Pearson gets to assess his squad against different opposition, with the opening game of the Championship season against Blackpool less than three weeks away.

FA Cup (Round Three)
Ashton Gate

City faced Pompey at Ashton Gate back in January, as the hosts advanced to Round Four of the Emirates FA Cup. Famara Diédhiou put the home side ahead but the League One side battled back to equalise before half-time through Callum Johnson.

Pompey threatened much more in the second half but couldn’t capitalise, before Chris Martin picked out the top corner with a stunning finish inside the 83rd minute.
