🔎 MansionBet Match Preview: Peterborough United (A)

We take a closer look at our next opponents ahead of Saturday's trip to Cambridgeshire.

🔵 Our opponents

Peterborough will host City for the first time since November 2014 and off the back of a good point against high-flyers AFC Bournemouth in midweek.

They held the Cherries to a goalless draw to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat to Coventry City last weekend. As for the Robins, we’re looking to respond after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Millwall on Wednesday and enter the October international break with a positive result.

City had been five games unbeaten until Jed Wallace’s penalty proved the difference in London, whereas the Posh have struggled since returning to the Championship this season.

They clinched automatic promotion from League One in dramatic style back in May, after they fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Lincoln City, and earn the most valuable point thanks to Jonson Clarke-Harris’ stoppage-time penalty.

They did beat Derby County in their first home game of the season, but the Posh went on a five-game stretch without a win (D1, L4) before victory over Birmingham City at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Manager Darren Ferguson will have Clarke-Harris available for selection on Saturday. He was set to serve a four-game ban after admitting historic abusive social media comments, but he has remained able to play while an appeal decision is yet to be made.

Skipper Mark Beevers (hamstring), Jack Marriott (hamstring), Joel Randall (thigh) and Ricky-Jade Jones (knee) are all ruled out of the fixture.

⚽️ Our last game: Match action v Millwall

Jed Wallace’s second-half penalty was enough to separate the teams at The Den as City’s unbeaten run came to an end.

It had been a fairly even game but former City loanee Benik Afobe won Millwall a penalty, which substitute Wallace converted just after the hour-mark.

The Lions had hit the post late in the first half after Bentley had made a great close-range stop to deny former teammate Afobe on the goalkeeper’s 100th City appearance.

However, the hosts held on to end the visitor’s five-match unbeaten run and deny them a fourth consecutive away victory.

👀 ONE TO WATCH

Back to face his former side: Sammie Szmodics

Sammie Szmodics' opportunities at City were limited after he signed for the Robins in the summer of 2019. After just four appearances in all competitions he went on loan to the Posh where he became a hit with the club and its fans.

He made the move to Cambridgeshire permanent in September 2020, helping Peterborough win promotion from League One at the end of last season with 15 goals in the third tier.

He is yet to find the back of the net from seven appearances in the league this term.

⏮ MATCH REWIND...

Bristol City 2-0 Peterborough United
15.02.2015
League One
Ashton Gate

Aden Flint and Kieran Agard scored as City bounced back from a rare home defeat to Sheffield United just days earlier.

In fact they cruised to a routine 2-0 win over a Peterborough United side who offered little threat from start to finish at Ashton Gate.

The hosts never looked back from the moment Flint lashed in a ninth minute opener, and Agard’s similarly close-range finish at the start of the second period effectively ended the contest prematurely.
