MansionBet Match Preview: Millwall (H)

City return to Ashton Gate for the visit of Millwall on Tuesday night (December 15th, 7.45pm KO) - hoping to deliver an early Christmas present in the form of three points at home.

In partnership with MansionBet, here’s a preview of what you can expect from the fixture with the Lions.

For Dean Holden, it's an opportunity to halt the possibility of consecutive defeats, after Saturday's disappointing 2-0 loss against Rotherham United.

Speaking on Saturday, Holden admitted performance levels were not as expected and he wants a quick response with the Millwall fixture coming just three days later.

It's already been achieved this season. The Robins have followed up recent defeats with wins against QPR and Blackburn Rovers, respectively, but results continued to be up and down with a win followed by a loss.

But inconsistency is widespread across the Sky Bet Championship campaign and Millwall are no different as they head to BS3 in struggling form after 10 games without a win (D4, L6) - three of those defeats have come in the last four games.

Their poor run of form comes after they had lost just once from their first eight league fixtures.

They look to Jed Wallace for inspiration however, with the forward leading the club's goals (5) and assists (3) charts in all competitions. He's played some of the most minutes too.

The Lions could look to their width and strength in the air to find a way of dominating and exploiting City on Tuesday night. The Robins have been suspect from wide deliveries in recent weeks - conceding against QPR, Birmingham City and Rotherham - so Holden will be keen to plug those gaps.

But the London side's woes continued at the weekend in a 3-0 loss away to Middlesbrough. The game was effectively over after Boro struck three times in the opening 20 minutes. But while Gary Rowett's team have slipped to 17th in the standings, they remain eight points from the relegation battle and with plenty to play for, there may be no need to raise the alarm just yet.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

Millwall 1-2 Bristol City
The Den

Tuesday, April 30th 2019
Sky Bet Championship

City fought from behind in dramatic style to overcome Millwall 2-1 at the Den in this penultimate match of the 2018/19 campaign.

Lee Gregory had volleyed the hosts into a first-half lead but their push for a second goal proved unsuccessful, with the post coming to City’s aid before Max O’Leary’s save from a Shaun Williams penalty.

That proved to be the turning point as the Robins equalised through Jamie Paterson’s exquisite free kick only four minutes later, before Famara Diédhiou pounced to hit the winner less than ten minutes from the end.

The result meant City would guarantee a top-nine finish but a final-day draw away to Hull City was not enough to secure a play-off push.
