MansionBet Match Preview: Millwall (FAC R4)

Championship rivals go head-to-head this weekend for a spot in the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round.

In association with City's Principal Partner MansionBet, we take a closer look at the match...

City entered the competition at the Third Round and overcame Portsmouth thanks to a stunning strike from Chris Martin.

Famara Diédhiou had put the Robins in front with a cool finish before Callum Johnson equalised just before half-time.

They say it is a good time to score, and the League One side looked to take confidence after the break but City found a way and edged the contest when Martin blasted his side through to the nest round with his 83rd minute drive.

It meant a winning starting to 2021 and their reward would be a Fourth Round tie with Millwall. City went on to beat Preston in the Championship but lost in midweek to Norwich, meaning Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Millwall is a chance to bounce back from defeat.

Gary Rowett’s men beat Boreham Wood 2-0 in their Third Round encounter, with former City keeper Frank Fielding earning the clean sheet in only his second appearance for the Lions. Rowett fielded a strong Millwall XI and the goals came from Kenneth Zohore and Shaun Hutchinson in a game where they expectedly dominated the ball.

City and Millwall have already faced off this season, with the Lions victorious in a 2-0 win at Ashton Gate back in December.

Tom Bradshaw would know little about the opener as it flicked off his boot at pace, while Millwall capitalised on the break with Mason Bennett doubling their advantage in the second half.

City looked off the pace but came closest when Nahki Wells’ free-kick was turned on to the post. However, Famara Diédhiou received a second yellow card and therefore a subsequent red inside the final ten minutes, after attempting an overhead kick but caught his opponent in the process.

Millwall’s form has been patchy since, (DLWDLW) in a run where they’ve played Nottingham Forest twice, they earned a good point against AFC Bournemouth and beat Huddersfield Town last time out as they push towards midtable.

Norwich exploited the space behind the full-backs in midweek and Millwall may look to do similar, with Matt Smith one of a handful of tricky targets in the box should they get the opportunity to cross.

A place in the fifth round of the FA Cup is at stake, with the winner at the Den set to take on either Sheffield United or Plymouth away, following the outcome of their clash.

And supporters are reminded that the match will be available to watch on BT Sport Extra 6.

City fought from behind in dramatic style to overcome Millwall 2-1 at the Den in this penultimate match of the 2018/19 campaign.

Lee Gregory had volleyed the hosts into a first-half lead but their push for a second goal proved unsuccessful, with the post coming to City’s aid before Max O’Leary’s save from a Shaun Williams penalty.

That proved to be the turning point as the Robins equalised through Jamie Paterson’s exquisite free kick only four minutes later, before Famara Diédhiou pounced to hit the winner less than ten minutes from the end.

The result meant City would guarantee a top-nine finish but a final-day draw away to Hull City was not enough to secure a play-off push.
