🔎 MansionBet Match Preview: Millwall (A)

We take a closer look at our opponents from South East London as we gear up for midweek action against Millwall.

🦁 Our opponents

It’s been somewhat of a slow start to the season for Millwall, who have registered six draws from their first nine league games. They have just one win, which came at the end of the end of August, a 2-1 victory over Blackpool.

They were also denied victory against struggling Nottingham Forest last time out with Matt Smith’s opening header cancelled out by a freak goal from Max Lowe.

That was a first league goal of the season for former City striker Smith, with Millwall’s stubborn defence praised for earning a fourth successive league draw.

However, they are chasing a sixth game unbeaten in the Championship, likewise are City, with the Lions last tasting defeat at the end of August in a 3-1 loss to Cardiff City.

Benik Afobe is another former Robin to be plying his trade with the Lions. The striker is on loan from Stoke City and has two goals from eight appearances in all competitions. Both of his goals have come in the Championship, of which he has started five times.

He is one of three loanees brought in this season, alongside Dan Ballard (Arsenal) and Sheyi Ojo (Liverpool), meanwhile the Lions saw a host of departures including goalkeeper Frank Fielding, a member of City’s 2014/15 double-winning campaign.

⚽️ Our last game: Match action v Fulham

Kasey Palmer’s first goal of the season secured City a point as the Robins fought back from behind in a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

The away side had plenty of the ball but the hosts grew into the game and were in positive spirits come the half-time whistle.

However, Fulham looked reinvigorated after the interval and Aleksandar Mitrovic volleyed against the crossbar before scoring moments later when he headed in from Harry Wilson’s nod across the box.

If anything, though, the Robins improved after going a goal behind and Palmer made an instant impact off the bench, tucking home from the tightest of angles.

👀 ONE TO WATCH

Jed Wallace in action at Ashton Gate last season

Jed Wallace:

Jed Wallace has played a starring role for Millwall this season, and was instrumental in their win against Blackpool with a goal and assist.

Another assist helped Millwall to a 1-1 draw away to West Brom earlier this month, before he set up George Saville’s equaliser against Coventry City.

That was his last appearance for the club as he looks to reach peak fitness in time for the visit of City to The Den on Wednesday night. "It’s one where we’ll assess it over the next 24 hours," Wallace's manager Rowett has said.

Wallace signed for the Lions from Wolves 2017, having spent two seasons on loan with the club.

⏮ MATCH REWIND...

Millwall 0-3 Bristol City

Emirates FA Cup
The Den

City produced a convincing 3-0 display over Millwall at the Den to advance in the FA Cup.

Famara Diédhiou won and converted a first-half penalty when he was brought down by former City keeper Frank Fielding.

Millwall saw a chance headed off the line by Tommy Rowe as they went close to an equaliser but Nahki Wells and Antoine Semenyo struck in the second half to put an end to the contest in South East London.

Wells doubled City’s lead with a deflected free kick, and turned provider for Semenyo who grabbed his third goal of the season after powering through the middle and calmly slotted the ball past Fielding.
