MansionBet Match Preview: Millwall (A 2020/21)

City travel to Millwall for the penultimate game of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The Robins fared well at the Den earlier in the campaign as they advanced in the Emirates FA Cup – goals from Famara Diédhiou, Nahki Wells and Antoine Semenyo dealt the damage back in January.

But as supporters know all too well, City’s struggles in the league would soon develop and only four wins have been recorded since that cup meeting in South London.

Despite that, City are hoping to end the campaign on a positive note and continue to seek six points from their final two games, after news that Manager Nigel Pearson has signed on for three years.

But Pearson will need to see more fight after a frustrating period which has seen his side throw away leads of late. Notably in the first halves against Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town, City played well and led by the break on both occasions but The Chairboys and Hatters battled back to snatch the wins.

Highlights: Bristol City v Luton Town

City’s form has led to a gradual slide down the table but the Robins are now mathematically safe from relegation.

Up in midtable is where the Lions find themselves as the season draws to its end. They endured a patchy spell as the winter months settled in, which included a 10-game winless run until they beat City in the reverse league game at Ashton Gate in December.

But backed by just three losses in 16 fixtures, Millwall will look back on a stable campaign overall. It was a run which included eight wins and clean sheets in goalless draws against high-flyers Norwich City and Watford.

That said, the Hornets got their revenge over the Lions in a 1-0 win at the weekend, as they clinched promotion back to the Premier League. Prior to that, AFC Bournemouth ran out 4-1 winners.

Jed Wallace, strong from crosses and set-pieces, was on the scoresheet with a consolation goal against the Cherries and in an attacking sense he’s been Millwall player to watch. He’s made an impact with a goal or assist in five of their last eight fixtures, as he leads the club charts for goals (10) and assist (6) in all competitions.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

Millwall 1-2 Bristol City
The Den

Sky Bet Championship

City fought from behind in dramatic style to overcome Millwall 2-1 at the Den in this penultimate match of the 2018/19 campaign.

Lee Gregory had volleyed the hosts into a first-half lead but their push for a second goal proved unsuccessful, with the post coming to City’s aid before Max O’Leary’s save from a Shaun Williams penalty.

That proved to be the turning point as the Robins equalised through Jamie Paterson’s exquisite free kick only four minutes later, before Famara Diédhiou pounced to hit the winner less than ten minutes from the end.

The result meant City would guarantee a top-nine finish but a final-day draw away to Hull City was not enough to secure a play-off push.
