MansionBet Match Preview: Exeter City (A)

We head to Devon for the first of two pre-season games this Tuesday, starting with Exeter City.

City have previously held Celtic and Portsmouth to draws before beating MK Dons, all of which were played at the Robins High Performance Centre.

Tuesday's trip to Cliff Hill Training Ground comes in the penultimate week of pre-season with eyes soon turning on that first game of the new campaign against Blackpool. However, there are still tactics and plans to work on and the next fortnight will be a tough test for Nigel Pearson's players as they look to hit complete match fitness.

This latest meeting comes less than a year since Bristol City and Exeter City last competed at Ashton Gate, an opening round fixture in the Carabao Cup which the Robins won 2-0 last September. Antoine Semenyo scored his first goal for City that day after Jamie Paterson got the season off and running.

As for the Grecians, after losing to Port Vale in League Two they put together a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions through to November and Matt Taylor’s men found the back of the net 17 games in a row before a 2-0 defeat in the FA Cup Third Round to Sheffield Wednesday.

Patchier form in the second half of the season led to a slide down the table though they ended the campaign with a top-half finish, one year after they reached the League Two play-off final.

The Devon side have never competed higher than League One or its previous equivalents and they would have to wait until 1989/90 to win their first ever league title. That came as Fourth Division Champions – League Two by today’s format – under the management of former City manager Terry Cooper. They have suffered three relegations and two promotions since, as well as three League Two play-off final defeats in the five three seasons.

👀 ONE TO WATCH

From the archives: Matt Jay in action for Exeter City

Local lad Matt Jay is a key man to Manager Matt Taylor’s plans in the upcoming season, with the manager having previously spoken to the media about how he plans to build around the midfielder.

The 2020/21 campaign was a memorable one for the 25-year-old from Torbay, who is the Grecians’ longest-serving player having come through the Academy.

He notched 20 goals from 48 appearances last season and his efforts are expected to draw interest from other clubs. He's not had a bad pre-season either, scoring in wins over Weymouth and Bath City, as well as the opener in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City.

Carabao Cup Round One
Ashton Gate

Antoine Semenyo scored his first club goal to mark the perfect start in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Exeter City at Ashton Gate.

Jamie Paterson tucked home the first-half opener while substitute Semenyo added the late second to put City into the hat for the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Bristol City were in control of possession in the early stages, though the away side weren’t to be outplayed and the Grecians found their rhythm as the half progressed.
