MansionBet Match Preview: Brentford (A)

City get the chance to take on fellow play-off hopefuls Brentford when the two sides meet in West London.

For Dean Holden's men, it's a first visit to the Brentford Community Stadium and in association with City's Principal Partner MansionBet, we take a closer look at the match...

It's a top of the table clash with City still chasing down sixth spot, while Thomas Frank's men occupy third place just two points off Swansea in this rearranged enocunter.

Wednesday night's trip - originally scheduled for January 2nd - presents the Robins with a chance to bounce back after Saturday's defeat at Derby County, and Head Coach Holden will certainly demand a different showing from his players.

The defeat at Pride Park extends an unwanted stretch of defeats on the road to five (excluding the Emirates FA Cup), in contrast to the Robins' home form with four straight wins at Ashton Gate.

It's consistency away from BS3 where City need to improve, and that's been highlighted by Jack Hunt in his preview of the midweek clash.

As for Brentford, the Bees are buzzing in the promotion places and continue to close in with games in hand.

Aside from a 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham, Thomas Frank's side were on a 16-game unbeaten streak, stretching back to late October. They've lost only five times all season in all competitions, just twice (league and FA Cup) at their new home since leaving Griffin Park, and head into the midweek fixture off the back of a resounding 7-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

They've made progress in the Carabao Cup too, beating Premier League opponents such as Southampton, Fulham and Newcastle United en route to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur. However, it shows their ability to compete with big names as they look to battle for promotion to the top flight again after last season's play-off final disappointment.

City will recognise they will need to be at their defensive best to deny the counter-attacking, creative and forward-thinking threats of the Bees.

Ivan Toney leads the Championship goalscoring charts with an impressive return of 19 goals to date putting him on course for a Team of the Season spot already. He's averaging a goal every 115 minutes, not that it applied against Wycombe last time out, as he struck a hat-trick.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

Brentford 0-1 Bristol City
Griffin Park
Saturday, October 1st 2018
Sky Bet Championship

City climbed up the Sky Bet Championship table when they got back to winning ways thanks to Niclas Eliasson’s 90th-minute volley at Griffin Park.

An open game in the capital saw the Bees strike the post after going down to ten men when Chris Mepham received his marching orders, before Eliasson snuck in unmarked at the backpost, to ensure the three points would be travelling back down the M4.

Max O’Leary grew in confidence as he made his league debut for the Robins, making a number of stops to keep the travelling side in the contest.

But Lee Johnson’s side ultimately did enough to snatch the win and rise above Brentford in the Championship, in what would be an open game as the match developed.
