🔎 MansionBet Match Preview: Barnsley (H)

City and Barnsley will meet for the 100th time in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship match at Ashton Gate (Saturday, October 30th, 3pm).

🔴 OURSELVES

City go into the game looking to end a run of three home defeats and searching for the first home game of the season.

Manager Nigel Pearson will be without Nathan Baker, still recovering after leaving the Hawthorns pitch feeling unwell, while Tommy Conway, Robbie Cundy, Andy King, Antoine Semenyo and Joe Williams are still unavailable.Conway, Semenyo and Williams will be back on the grass running next week but King will be out until December at the earliest following hamstring surgery and Cundy is still continuing his recovery from a knee injury.

Pearson is in determined mood, saying: “The players understand the importance of winning against Barnsley. Now is the time to stand up. We need a performance and we need to get a home win and our season going again.”

🧳  OUR OPPONENTS

It’s been a troublesome time for the Tykes with Head Coach Markus Schopp so far struggling to recapture the form of last season’s top-six team.

Barnsley ended the 2020/21 campaign in fifth place to grab a play-off spot, though they were unable to beat Swansea City over two legs (2-1).

Those exploits meant the South Yorkshire club headed into the new campaign in a confident mood, even though they saw their Head Coach Valérien Ismaël leave for newly-relegated West Bromwich Albion in the summer.

Under their new man in charge Schopp, however, Barnsley have recorded just one win
so far this season – beating Coventry City at Oakwell on Matchday Two.

Twelve games later and the Tykes have not tasted victory since. In fact, Schopp’s side head to Ashton Gate on the back of six straight defeats, form which sees them sit 23rd in the Championship – with only Derby County's points deduction keeping them off bottom.

They certainly showed fighting spirit last time out when they went close to holding Sheffield United to a draw. In an action- packed second half, the Tykes went 3-0 down at Bramall Lane before goals from substitute Devante Cole and Aaron Leya Iseka with eight minutes remaining threatened to spoil the Blades’ afternoon.

The visitors then hit the post but their South Yorkshire rivals held on to inflict another defeat on Barnsley.

Former Austrian international Schopp, however, believes there are brighter times on
the horizon. “There are still a couple of guys to recover (from injuries), they are really close,” he was quoted after the game. “When we have these players, it will be a different Barnsley.”

Schopp has had to contend with a number of injuries to a team who last season reached the play-offs, though Jordan Williams, Mads Andersen and Romal Palmer could return at Ashton Gate following injury.

Off the pitch, the club’s home ground is undergoing remedial work. The West Stand, which opened 130 years ago, is closed as repairs are carried out following safety concerns.

⏮ MATCH REWIND...

Bristol City 3-1 Barnsley
05.08.2017
Championship
Ashton Gate

City started the new season with a bang to blow Barnsley away in a whirlwind first half at Ashton Gate.

Bobby Reid continued from where he left off in pre-season with two goals and an assist, leaving City 3-0 up inside half an hour.

Famara Diédhiou scored City’s second with a close-range header to mark his Sky Bet Championship debut with a goal.

The hosts were dominant throughout and only Barnsley keeper Adam Davies prevented an even more one-sided scoreline.

👀 ONE TO WATCH

In what has been a tough campaign for the club, Poland international defender Michal Helik (left) has looked to give his all.

He leads his club’s Opta ratings with a score of 7.13 in the Championship, with three Man of the Match displays over the course of the season.

The 26-year-old centre-back – who featured for Poland in their 1-1 draw against England last month – has played every minute in both the Championship and Carabao Cup this season, averaging more than six headers per game. He is noted for his interceptions and positioning, tackling and aerial duels.

The six-foot, three-inch defender started his career at Ruch Chorzow before a move to Cracovia in 2017. He joined Barnsley in September 2020 where he has made 62 appearances in all competitions to date.
