MansionBet Match Preview: Aston Villa (CC R3, H)

City's fine early form is rewarded in the shape of Premier League opponents Aston Villa in Round Three of the Carabao Cup.

Get the lowdown on Bristol City v Aston Villa with today's match preview brought you in partnership with MansionBet...

It will be a 'Deans in the dugout' matchup with messrs Holden and Smith going head to head. The pair worked at Walsall together where Holden was given his first coaching role.

Fast forward to 2020 and there could be no better time to face top-flight opponents with Holden's squad buzzing after their start to the 2020/21 season. It's four wins from four, three clean sheets and 10 goals scored among some impressive early displays.

Not that the team are getting ahead of themselves but a perfect start is a perfect start nonetheless and confidence and belief are naturally high.

City have already beaten Exeter City in the first round and put four goals past League One newboys Northampton Town a week ago.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are enjoying their own good form, perhaps buoyed by surviving the Premier League drop last season. It went down to the wire, but they secured the most vital point in a final-day 1-1 draw with West Ham United, as they went unbeaten in their last four games of the unprecedented 2019/20 campaign.

Dark clouds surrounded the future of attacking midfielder Jack Grealish but those were lifted when the England international, Villa's talisman, put pen to paper on a fresh five-year deal earlier this month.

That news came on the same day they kicked off their delayed 2020/21 campaign with the 3-1 win over Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup Second Round to set up Thursday's tie in BS3. Their Premier League campaign also kicked off last weekend, where Ezri Konsa grabbed the only goal to get the Villains off to a winning start.

Injury update: Callum O’Dowda, Liam Walsh and Joe Morrell continue their rehabilitation, meanwhile Joe Williams, Jay Dasilva and Tomas Kalas are now back on grass.

A spectacular second-half turnaround saw Bristol City defeat Aston Villa for the first time in 37 years at Ashton Gate.

The hosts trailed as early as the fifth minute to Jack Grealish’s far-post volley, but struck twice in quick succession either side of the hour mark through Tammy Abraham and Joe Bryan to turn the game on its head.

Lee Tomlin’s late free kick – his first goal since returning to the club on a permanent deal – put the result beyond doubt against a Villa side who had threatened to increase their lead before the interval.
