Magnusson’s Iceland secure historic point

Hordur Magnusson’s Iceland claimed their first World Cup point after securing a 1-1 draw with Argentina.

The two-time winners broke the deadlock in the 19th minute courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s vicious strike, but Iceland - the smallest nation to ever qualify for the finals - drew level just four minutes later when Alfred Finnbogason swept home from close range.

Lionel Messi was presented with the perfect opportunity to restore Argentina’s lead in the second period after Magnusson was adjudged to have fouled Maximiliano Meza inside the penalty area, but his spot-kick was saved by the impressive Hannes Halldorsson.

Magnusson completed 90 minutes in Moscow and will now prepare for Iceland's second Group D fixture with Nigeria in Volgograd on June 22nd, before facing Croatia in Rostov four days later.
