Magnusson’s Iceland edge closer to World Cup

Hordur Magnusson completed 90 minutes for Iceland in last night’s crucial 2018 World Cup qualifying victory over Ukraine.

Iceland gave their hopes of reaching Russia a huge boost, as Gylfi Sigurdsson’s brace saw the national side climb back into the qualifying positions, moving level on points with Croatia at the top of Group I.

Magnusson’s side now face a tough trip to third-placed Turkey in October, before hosting Kosovo in their final qualifying match.

Elsewhere, Callum O’Dowda was a second-half substitute in Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 defeat to Serbia, while West Brom loanee Jonathan Leko started for England Under-19s in their 3-1 loss to Germany.
