'Learnings and recovery are key' - Oxtoby

Bristol City Women defeated Crystal Palace 4-2 on Thursday evening to make it two wins from two in the FA Continental Cup and now face an away trip to Manchester on Saturday afternoon..

Goals from Emma Bissell, Chloe Logarzo (2) and Charlie Wellings handed the Robins victory at Bromley FC, and despite the win Oxtoby knows there are area for improvement.

“We started really well and had a brilliant first half. We were really positive with the ball and we created some great chances, but in the second half we were sloppy in the first fifteen minutes and that has got to be better.

“There were some great patterns of play in the first half, we were moving the ball really well. They were playing five at the back, so we had to be patient and we were rewarded for the good work we were doing.

“We’ve made changes at half-time and we need to start better. We opened the door for them a little bit, and credit to them they took their chances but they came from our mistakes and that’s not good enough.

“We need to be a little bit smarter when the momentum swings in favour of the other team, and we weren’t good enough at that today which needs to be improved.

“There are learning opportunities there and we need to learn quickly ahead of Saturday.”

Oxtoby’s side face a tight turnaround as they travel to the North West on Saturday to face Manchester City at the Academy Stadium as Barclays FAWSL action resumes.

The Australian is disappointed at having to travel away twice in a 48 hour period and has stressed the importance of recovery ahead of the challenge that awaits them at the Academy Stadium.

“It’s a really quick turnaround for the group and the scheduling of games is really disappointing. To play away twice in 48 hours is tough for any team, especially us when you look at the comparison of resources.

“Man City are a great side, who will be high on confidence after their FA Cup win, so we’re going to have to recover quickly to try and put ourselves in the best position possible ahead of the weekend.

“It’s going to be a completely different type of game for the group, but a great challenge nonetheless and if we can put in a 90 minute performance then we'll give ourselves a chance to take something away from the game.”
