Kalas hails collective attitude

City captain Tomas Kalas praised the whole team for putting their bodies on the line as they ground out a hard-fought win over Huddersfield Town.

Famara Diédhiou scored two goals by the 26th minute as City got on top in the first half at Ashton Gate.

The Terriers battled back and were a force in the second half, eventually pulling a goal back through Juninho Bacuna. It was a nervy final 30 minutes in BS3 as City put up their defences to prevent the visitors from sneaking an equaliser.

It’s a result which means City have won their last four home games and record a fifth win from their last seven matches in all competitions.

Kalas told Robins TV: “The points are building and that’s most important. We’ve won five of our last seven games, but I think we are on the right track.”

He added: “That’s a perfect start and I’m not taking anything away from the boys because that’s brilliant and we played so well for 20 minutes. But what happened afterwards shouldn’t happen. They are a brilliant team, where they are in the league is not true to how they play but three points are three points!”

But Kalas stressed there remains room for improvement as he analysed how City allowed the Terriers back into the game.

“Sometimes we make it hard for ourselves, so we have room to improve,” he said. “That’s managing the game much better because not many times have we been 2-0 up that quickly. That’s something we need to work on, but we need to realise that can happen. Hopefully we can manage it much better than we did today.”

City were operating as defensively as possible towards the latter stages as Huddersfield pressed to make it 2-2.

But it was the team’s determination which helped them hold out for the three points.

Kalas continued: “In the last ten minutes it was just putting bodies on the line and defend for your life. Massive credit to those who came on and those who didn’t too because we are one team and we stick together. I think that’s why we are able to convert these games into three points.”

Kalas and his centre-back partner Alfie Mawson made four blocks each, though the towering defender admitted he “lost count towards the end”. He added: “It’s not only me or Alfie, Hunty, Mapps or Bents, it’s collective attacking and collective defending.”

Next up for Holden's men is a trip to Derby County this Saturday and the fixture will be live on Robins TV (January 30th, 3pm KO). The livestream coverage starts at 2.30pm.
