Johnson Snr Praises Son Lee's Side

Cheltenham Town boss Gary Johnson has praised son Lee’s side after Bristol City overcame the Robins 2-1 at Whaddon Road.

The former City manager’s team fell to defeat courtesy of goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Lee Tomlin, before Danny Wright grabbed a late consolation.

Family bragging rights returned to Johnson Jnr, but Snr was pleased with his squad’s application against a strong City outfit.

“Lee needed a competitive game to put his new players under pressure,” he told Cheltenham Town’s official Youtube channel.

"We did have a chat (pre-match) because if one of us went out there easy-osy and the other was kicking the other team then somebody would’ve got hurt, so it was important both teams played like they’re going to in the league.

“I thought they started off fantastically because they have a real rotation game with top players.

“The two goals came from two players that are probably worth £20m – not that we’re going to buy them, but it would be nice!”

He added: “We had to stick with it because they’ve got that movement and that game.

“A high press is dangerous and I thought we played it very well. A lot of teams will sit back against them and let them come on to them, but I wanted to play our own game.

“The high press will be quite dangerous in League Two because you won’t get a team like this…not with the potency they have got in more than one or two of their players.

“Credit to Lee, he’s got a good side together and I think we’ll both be happy with that game.”

Tickets for City’s home friendly with Portsmouth on Saturday, July 30th (3pm) remain on sale online and by phone (0117 963 0600).
