Lee Johnson was left ruing the loss of two points after City let a 3-0 half-time lead slip at Pride Park.
Matty Taylor marked his first start with his first goal for the club before strike partner Tammy Abraham struck twice from close range, taking his tally to 21 goals for the season.
But Darren Bent pulled one back for hosts Derby County before Taylor spurned a golden opportunity to make it 4-1.
With the Rams still alive in the contest, Tom Ince reduced the deficit to 3-2 and Bent equalised from the penalty spot nine minutes from time.
"We should have three points,” Johnson told Bristol City Player HD. “We set our game plan and administered that to perfection in the first half.
"Even in the second half, we should have scored two or three more goals.
"We had a killer instinct to go 3-0 up but we need that strength of character as a group to stay in front and see it out.
"I’m not going to lambast the players – they were superb, especially in that first half.
"Matty will be disappointed with the one from close range but he was superb on his full debut. We've got goalscorers, as we've shown today.
"We'll take the positives but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed to draw, despite it being such a tough game."
