Johnson relishing Spanish training camp

Lee Johnson has outlined what he wants to achieve from the club's pre-season Marbella tour.

The head coach is relishing the seven-day warm weather training camp and says his players will be “stretched" physically and mentally – as well as offering important team building time together.

The management, staff and players arrived at the Marbella Football Centre earlier today, following a 4.30am departure from Ashton Gate.

"This week is about cohesion and integrating the new players - understanding what makes them tick,” said Johnson.

"It’s about bonding and creating a good team spirit that can see you through, especially in the tough times of the Championship, and naturally to get players as fit and as sharp as possible moving into the last 10-12 games of preparation before the season.

“You live in each other’s pockets for a week and there is no escape. The players will be stretched mentally and physically and it’s important that we see things like punctuality and that they are disciplined in hydration for example because all those elements we look at as a coaching staff to find out as much as we can about the players.”

City’s five summer signings – Marley Watkins, Jack Hunt, Adam Webster, Andreas Weimann and Hakeeb Adelakun - have all travelled and the head coach believes it will be a beneficial trip for these players in particular.

"They have to understand the ethos of the football club and the tactical game plan,” added Johnson.

"There is a lot of information that goes into putting on a performance and this is the best time to integrate new players.”

The Robins will play Real Balopédica Linense at Estadio Municipal de La Línea on Tuesday, July 17th and Rayo Vallecano four days later on Saturday, July 21st at Marbella Football Centre.
