Lee Johnson reflected on the performance rather than the result in City’s 1-0 defeat to La Liga side Rayo Vallecano tonight.
Alex Moreno’s 90th-minute strike for last season’s Secunda Division Champions saw the Robins’ Spanish tour end in defeat at the Marbella Football Centre.
Despite the defeat and Matty Taylor departing with an ankle injury after just five minutes, Johnson drew plenty of positives from the second game of their Spanish trip.
“I thought it was a good performance,” Johnson exclusively said to BCTV. “We obviously used different starters from the game before (2-2 draw with Real Balopédica Linense).
“Rayo Vallecano are a good side – a La Liga club this season. It was a bright, intense game with chances at both ends.
“In the first half we should have had two or three goals. We had some good chances and so did they. All in all, a draw would probably have been a fair result and it was disappointing to get it nicked at the end.
“There were a lot of good performances. I thought Joe Bryan was excellent, it was good to get 45 minutes out of Bails (Bailey Wright), Adam Webster, Korey, Eliasson. Weimann did some great movement and we have go to pick him out a little bit better.
“I was gutted for Matty Taylor tonight because it was a bad tackle, Hopefully it won’t be too bad because I think Matty has been really sharp so far and still I don’t think Bristol City has seen his best football in a run of fitness yet.”
Pat Lam was full of praise for a rocking atmosphere at Ashton Gate as Bears secured a bonus point victory.
