Lee Johnson could not hide his frustration after seeing numerous chances not taken as City were held to a goalless draw by Burton Albion.
The hosts hit the bar from the first attack of the game and had a legitimate goal disallowed on the stroke of half-time before Lee Tomlin skied a 67th-minute penalty.
The result meant City dropped into the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone for the first time this season after Blackburn Rovers defeated fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park.
“I’m left frustrated,” Johnson told Bristol City Player HD. “In the first half it’s a goal, without question not a foul, and in the second half obviously we miss a penalty.
“We’ve had things cleared off the line and the lads have had a right go today. On another day we win by two or three.
“It was a great save to tip Tomlin’s volley on to the bar, but we just couldn’t seem to get it over the line today.
“Burton had a good chance when they should’ve scored from four or five yards out, but over the balance of play we’ve had the much better ones.
“I thought the fans were good today – we asked them to keep going right until the end. I know they’re frustrated with the draw, but I think they would’ve seen that we were the better side.
“It’s still in our hands. We’ve got Blackburn and Wigan to play and another big game on Tuesday. We’ve still got it in us to get ourselves out of trouble, and we will.”
