It's an exciting day - Johnson

Lee Johnson says there is a “buzz” around Ashton Gate following the release of the 2017/18 fixture list.

City will host Johnson’s former club Barnsley on the opening day, before travelling to Birmingham City and Brentford in successive away trips.

League One play-off winners Millwall will then visit BS3 a week prior to Aston Villa, in what makes up a hectic first month of the new campaign.

“It is exciting, I am looking forward to it,” said the head coach on BCTV.

“There is a real buzz when the fixtures are announced but there is also that sense of seriousness.

“When looking through the fixture list, I think it has been kind to us this year on a number of occasions. We are at home on the opening day, Boxing Day, and the last game of the season, which I think are three pivitol games.

“It’s a tough league, anybody can beat anybody, but we have to make sure we hit the ground running.”

Johnson also acknowledged the strength of the 2017/18 Championship, giving a particular mention to Sunderland – a team City will visit for the first time since 1998 following their relegation from the top flight.

“I haven’t played there as a player so it will be a first for me and I’m sure it will be a good game,” he added.

“They are potentially in ownership change so it will be interesting to see what they do, but they are another club with parachute payments and Premier League players.

“I think it will be an exciting Championship, you only have to look at the names being linked with some of the clubs, John Terry and Birmingham City for example.

“It is a great division and I’m thoroughly looking forward to it.”
