It may not have been their pre-season objective, but Gary O’Neil says the City players are now solely focused on staying in the Sky Bet Championship.
City slipped into the relegation zone for the first time this season following Saturday’s goalless draw with Burton Albion at Ashton Gate, and now have 11 games left to save themselves.
The first of those is another home game against O’Neil’s former club Norwich City tonight (7.45pm).
“The fans were great on Saturday – they didn’t turn on the lads at all,” the midfielder told Bristol City Player HD.
“You can tell they’re frustrated and we’re frustrated as well because it’s not the season we wanted, but what’s key now is that we make sure we accept the challenge that we’ve got.
“It’s not the challenge that we wanted because we want to be challenging at the other end, but we are where we are.
“From where we are now, an achievement would be to finish fourth bottom, but that would still be a terrible season compared to what we wanted.”
The fans were great on Saturday – they didn’t turn on the lads at all.
The 33-year-old was shocked to see Norwich, who he expected to compete for promotion this season, thrashed 5-1 at Sheffield Wednesday last time out.
“I’ve read some of the comments from after their game and it seems like they’re not happy with what’s going on,” he added.
“If we can get things to go against them and we start well, it might play into our favour.
“I’m surprised they’re not in the top six and obviously they’ve fallen quite far adrift now, so it might be a good time to play them.
“I think realistically they’re out of it. It’s a chance for us at home to get three points and get ourselves away from the relegation zone.”
