It’s been a great trip – Fielding

Frank Fielding has expressed his satisfaction with City’s pre-season training camp in Tenerife.

Lee Johnson and his coaching staff have whisked the first team squad off to T3 (Tenerife Top Training) to put their charges through seven-days of warm weather training, in preparation for the new season.

The shot stopper is undertaking his fifth pre-season in City colours since his switch from Derby County, and declares the facilities on the Canary Island are some of the best he has experienced.

“It’s been very enjoyable; the facilities are amazing and they have everything we need to get fit during pre-season,” he told BCTV.

“We had a talk amongst the lads last night and many of them said this is probably the best sporting complex we have been to in a pre-season, and it is on a par with our recent pre-season tour to South Africa and Botswana.

“Training has been hard, the heat has been tough, and even when it is overcast it is still very humid in comparison to home.

“We are also quite high up so in terms of altitude it has also been beneficial.

“Having the training facility nearby is useful as it means we don’t have to travel far each day and it makes things a bit easier, allowing us to concentrate on our football and focus on that first game (Barnsley).”

Johnson’s side will host Tercera Division club Atlético Unión Güímar at T3 today in a practice match, and Fielding is hoping to continue his winning streak in Tenerife, having already won the squad’s quiz night and beach soccer tournament.

“When I’m off the pitch because I’ve got two young kids I’m not too competitive, I’m kind of easy and I enjoy spending time with the lads, listening to the banter and joining in,” he added.

“Although I want to win everything, it’s not the be all and end all. This week just seems to have clicked. I won the quiz, not on my own, with Packy, Ben and Tayls, and with Packy again I won the beach soccer – it’s been quite enjoyable.

“On the pitch, we have been working on a few different things so hopefully we can take those into today’s game.

“It’s also another chance for us to get match fit. When you train and then play a game it is a different type of fitness, but it will give us the chance to get more minutes under our belts.

“The end of pre-season is drawing closer and the first aim of the campaign is to take three points off Barnsley, and today’s game will give the lads another chance to get closer to match speed.”
