🎥 Interview: ‘We’re pleased with where we are’

Nigel Pearson looks back on a successful pre-season training camp at Loughborough University.

It’s been a week of gruelling fitness challenges, pool work, time spent on conditioning and in the gym as well as become a closer unit as the squad prepares for the new season.

Speaking after the final training session at Loughborough University, Pearson told Robins TV: “I think we’ve got everything we wanted out of it. From the physical side to the conditioning, the players have continued to build on the sound foundations of the first two weeks. It’s been a test with the heat but the players have coped really well and pushed themselves to new levels

“We’re pleased with where the squad is at, the training sessions in terms of the football we have moved forward so yes it’s going to plan.”

A key part of the trip was about bringing the squad closer together and Pearson is encouraged by the atmosphere surrounding his group of players.

“To be a success you have to get the fundamentals right: the quality of players has to be right, the methodology has to be right but of course it’s not enough to have that,” he explained.

“We need to create a positive environment and it’s been a pleasure for me to be able to sit back and see things develop. The people within the group, players and staff alike, have evolved naturally.

“The foundation is hard work and understanding when to work. Anyone who has watched us work this week will have any doubts that we’ve put the work in when we’ve needed it and we’ve had fun too.”

With everyone working hard, competition for places naturally come to the fore, though Pearson knows the group have to continue performing and improving – this is no time to sit back and be comfortable with where they are.

“It’s a healthy environment but it’s not about patting ourselves on the back, because it’s not job done,” he said. “We’re three weeks in and we have games coming up where the competition for places increases and intensifies.

“From speaking to the players, one of their observations is they’re enjoying it but the backdrop to that is a healthy competition and a will to win. It’s not all about having fun but building a healthy competition and a desire to be successful.”

City now return to the Robins High Performance Centre for the remainder of pre-season, where they face Portsmouth on Tuesday (July 20th, 2pm KO).
