James Crawley reports from John Smith's Stadium
Report: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Bristol City
Tuesday, February 25th 2020
Famara Diédhiou's late goal wasn't enough to snatch a result at the John Smith's Stadium, after goals from Chris Willock and Karlan Grant put Huddersfield Town on course for the home win.
Willock scored in the 39th minute when he cut in off the right and Grant made it a double blow from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute.
Famara Diédhiou pulled a goal back for the Robins in the 87th minute but it was too late for the Robins to salvage anything from the game in Yorkshire.
Head Coach Lee Johnson made four changes from the side that lost to West Bromwich Albion with Nathan Baker, Tommy Rowe, Jamie Paterson and Tomas Kalas replacing Ádám Nagy, Callum O’Dowda, Niclas Eliasson and Ashley Williams. Goalkeeper Dan Bentley captained the Robins for the first time.
Despite the rain holding off, the Robins had to weather a first-half storm of Huddersfield pressure with Emile Smith Rowe and Danny Simpson both firing over in the first 10 minutes.
City struggled to maintain possession against the Terriers, who got the ball in the net after 38 minutes through Fraizer Campbell, but the offside flag was raised.
However, the home side did take the lead a minute later when Willock cut in from the right and squeezed the ball between two defenders to beat Bentley.
City’s best chance fell to Diedhiou in first-half injury time, who was square on to Tommy Rowe’s pass and the Senegalese striker hit the bottom of the post from just outside the box.
The Robins made a double substitution at half-time with Eliasson and Nagy replacing Filip Benković and Markus Henriksen.
City got a foothold in the game but Huddersfield extended their lead in the 63rd minute when Nathan Baker ran into Smith Rowe and Grant scored from the penalty spot.
Nahki Wells almost pulled a goal back when he was put through by Eliasson, but fired wide.
The Robins got on the scoresheet when Andreas Weimann crossed for Jay Dasilva to head and though Jonas Lössl saved, Diédhiou was on hand to put the ball in the net.
Next up for City is a trip to Millwall on Saturday (February 29th, 3pm KO).
