How scenes from 2019 helped spur City to victory

Memories of the win in the Welsh capital last season were fresh in the minds of the players, as they battled to earn a 1-0 victory in Friday’s Severnside derby.

It was almost a year to the day since they recorded their win by the same scoreline in 2019/20 and striker Chris Martin revealed how the players were shown footage of those full-time scenes ahead of their latest derby with Cardiff City.

This was a Severnside derby with a difference, with no fans allowed in the stadium due to Covid-19 restrictions but that wasn’t to stop the squad from doing all they could to dig deep in a gutsy performance and make their fans happy at home.

“In the pre-match meeting, the manager showed us a clip from last year the fans singing in the background of the players celebrating after the game and he said that’s the feeling we want,” revealed Martin, who scored the crucial goal this time around with a close-range finish inside the second minute – his first league goal for the Robins.

Fans celebrate City's 2019 win in Cardiff

“We wanted to leave the fans happy at home and hopefully they are delighted. They can enjoy a few drinks now and over the weekend!”

It was a result which means City would go into the international break on the wave of consecutive wins as the squad looks to put what was a tough October period behind them.

Martin continued: “I think we showed fantastic attitude, the spirit has been very good even when the chips were down. People write you off, but we knew what we had in the dressing room, we knew we had a good spirit and togetherness and that’s shown in the last couple of games.

“We were a goal down against Huddersfield after a tough spell but we didn’t let it bother us and tonight we had to hang on against the Cardiff threat. We showed a togetherness and that’s been built by the staff, the manager and it’s something he preaches a lot. We’ve taken it on board, we have a lot of belief in each other so it’s nice to see that pay off with two wins out of two.”

He can now look forward to a mini rest period before focus turns to the next block of Championship action and looking back the goalscorer said City have enjoyed a “good start and a platform for us to build on.”

City will return from the international break when they host Derby County in two weeks’ time (Saturday, November 21st, 3pm KO), live on Robins TV.
