Helping hand for young Robins

City players have been lending a helping virtual hand to the club’s Academy scholars and Robins Foundation students via a series of lockdown Zoom calls.

There have been some inspiring question and answer sessions for Bristol City FC Academy scholars with the likes of Jay Dasilva, Andreas Weimann and Jamie Paterson.

These online sessions provided the youngsters with an insight into the hard work and determination needed to become a professional footballer and the route into their career.

Paterson has offered his advice and guidance to City's young scholars during lockdown

Dasilva spoke to the youngsters about football in the family, breaking through at Luton and representing his country among a host of other topics.

Weimann looked back on his initial move to England as a first-year scholar with Aston Villa, dealing with injuries and learning against England’s best clubs in the Premier League.

Paterson reflected on being turned down by Manchester United before breaking through at Walsall and his strong mental attitude to keep positive. He also talked through his journey and how the opportunity to join Bristol City came about which he described as “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” He discussed hitting “rock bottom” and “soul searching” when not playing regularly as he offered strong advice to the scholars about bouncing back from difficult situations.

Tommy Rowe will be on the first 'Inside Ashton Gate' Zoom chat to students

Tommy Rowe and Callum O’Dowda will also be sitting down virtually with Robins Foundation students to chat about their respective football journeys, what life is like as a professional footballer and highlight the importance of education.

This will be the first of a Foundation series called 'Inside Ashton Gate' which aims to provide students with an insight into the career opportunities within the sporting industry.

Currently all Foundation-run education provisions have moved digitally. The education team at Ashton Gate have been providing mental health support through weekly one-to-one catch up sessions to ensure the wellbeing of all students during lockdown.
