Guernsey friendly to kick-off pre-season

City will begin pre-season with a tour date in Guernsey.

The match will take place at the non-league club’s Footes Lane stadium on Saturday, July 8th (kick-off 1pm).

The pre-season friendly will be contested for the Mike Thomas Memorial Trophy, named after the club’s much-loved former physio who passed away in May 2015. Last season Guernsey took on Huddersfield Town – Thomas’ favourite club – with the Premier League newcomers winning 6-0.

Entry prices for supporters have been set at £10 for seating, £6 for terracing, with under-16s priced at just £1.

The Green Lions survived relegation from the Isthmian League Premier Division by seven points in 2016/17, having only risen from Combined Counties football at the start of this decade.

City have forged strong links with Guernsey FC, with owner Steve Lansdown being a resident on the island.

Lansdown recently stated: “If there's anybody that's looking tasty from the point of view of going into the league format then we'd like to look at those players. It gives a pathway for the Guernsey FC players to look at the professional game through Bristol City Football Club if they want to. It's gives people the opportunity.”

It works both ways, and during the 2016/17 season young City trio Jake Andrews, Kodi Lyons-Foster and Cameron Pring all spent time on loan at Footes Lane.

Head coach Lee Johnson said: “It’s well-known that Steve lives in Guernsey and it’s a game we’ve wanted to play for some time.

“Our staff have built up a good relationship with Tony Vance (Guernsey manager) and this friendly will only strengthen the bond further.”

City have already booked up five other pre-season dates ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, as well as a week-long training camp in Tenerife.
