Giefer Joins On Loan From Schalke

City have completed the signing of Schalke 04 goalkeeper Fabian Giefer on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 26-year-old will train with his new team-mates for the first time today, in preparation for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship trip to Nottingham Forest.

Giefer can only feature once international clearance has been received.

Head coach Lee Johnson told bcfc.co.uk: “Fabian has come in to compete for the number one jersey.

“He’s certainly got a good pedigree, having played in the Bundesliga, and we hope he has a successful spell with us.”

Giefer began his professional career at Bayer Leverkusen, where he predominantly played for their second string.

In December 2010 he appeared in the UEFA Europa League as Leverkusen overcame Norway’s Rosenborg 1-0.

Giefer joined Fortuna Dusseldorf in Bundesliga 2, where he became a regular. His performances prompted Schalke 04 to come calling two seasons later.

He has been number two to fellow German Ralf Fahrmann at the Veltins-Arena and now gets the opportunity to stake a claim at Ashton Gate for the next four months.
