City are nervously awaiting the outcome of a scan on Luke Freeman's injured ankle.
The winger limped out of the 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers last Saturday and was forced to miss the midweek EFL Cup tie with Hull City.
With the minor swelling now subsiding, Freeman will undergo an important scan in the next 24 hours.
"It's in a bad area of the ankle and he's in some pain, but we really hope it isn't too bad," Johnson told Bristol City Player HD.
"With no real swelling now, if the scan is ok then he could play on Saturday. The worst case scenario is the scan is bad and then it could be weeks or months out."
Freeman is the only concern for Johnson ahead of his first return to Barnsley this weekend (Saturday, 3pm).
