Foundation support SportMe project

Staff from the foundation visited Amposta, Catalonia in partnership with the SportMe mentoring project.

In 2020 the Foundation was granted funding through Erasmus+ to develop and promote a mentoring strategy in the field of sport. The project includes working in collaboration with partners from Bristol, Spain and Portugal.

As part of the 24-month project, staff members from each partner have been invited to each country to show the issues each are facing in their local community and the different ways they are tackling them.

Foundation Chief Community Officer Chris Stenner and Chief Development Officer James Edwards travelled to Amposta to visit the Fundacio Privada Gentis project.

The first day consisted of meeting the team from the other partnerships involved to help develop the SportMe mentoring project followed by a tour of the town's impressive sporting facilities all funded by the local council.

Later they met the Mayor of Amposta Adam Tomas to discuss the number of different community projects the Foundation run in South Bristol and the importance of mentoring through sport.

Staff shared their experiences from the local foundation's existing Imentor mentoring scheme.

The second day was spent visiting the stunning national park, Parc Natural del Delta de l'Ebre, learning more about the rich culture and history of Amposta and the impact that mentoring has in the local community.

On the final day the team visited an alternative education provision Fundacio Privada Gentis.

The Gentis Foundation is a non-profit organisation that works to improve employability and development competence, emotional and social development of disadvantaged groups. They met with young people, refugees and asylum seekers who are all learning new skills to help them gain employment after they graduate from the programme.

Chief Community Officer Chris Stenner said: "The meeting was extremely beneficial for us to share and experience different ways of mentoring in the community, while also seeing how different cultures and communities use mentoring through sport. Mentoring is such a big part of our organisation so to learn from others will benefit the community we serve.

"I would like to thank everyone who we met in Amposta for their warm hospitality and for affording us so much time to learn from them. This includes the mayor, councillors, students of the second chance school and of course, the hosts Gentis."

"We are much looking forward to welcoming you to Bristol in 2022 and are excited to now start our pilot mentoring programme as part of the SportMe Project."
