Curtis Fleming says City will analyse their approach in both boxes as they look to improve for Saturday’s trip to Peterborough United (October 2nd, 3pm).
A narrow defeat to Millwall, settled by Jed Wallace’s penalty in the capital on Wednesday night, ended City’s hopes of going six unbeaten in the league.
There was little to separate the teams, with the Robins mustering 10 shots on goal. Five of those were blocked, while Andreas Weimann had the best first-half chance when he saw a shot saved by Bartosz Bialkowski.
Fleming, in charge in the dugout while Manager Nigel Pearson self isolates after returning a positive PCR test this week, was pleased with the players’ efforts but he wants to see more quality.
Assistant Manager Fleming told Robins TV: “You have to have quality defending and concentrate. We lost the ball in midfield, the guy (Benik Afobe) gets in and we switch off.
“We were around the box 25 times within the game, we haven’t worked the goalkeeper much and it’s about having the belief and ability we know they have, but we need to be more determined and concentrated in those areas.”
It’s a quick turnaround between the two games before the second international break of the season. The players were back in at the Robins High Performance Centre on Thursday before final preparations on Friday and travel ahead of the fixture.
“It is a little bit of recovery,” said Fleming, highlighting the small window of time between the games. “I don’t know where they get the schedule from sometimes! It’s tough because you’re looking for quality from these young men who are athletes. People say it’s only 90 minutes but you do get a few kicks, the body is fatigued and they’re giving their lot, we can’t question that.
“What we can do is look at where we can be better, especially in the attacking third on Wednesday night, defensively we stuck at it but we conceded a goal.”
Fleming also confirmed Joe Williams was substituted at The Den due to natural “fatigue”, while Nathan Baker had to come off after landing on his heel. Jay Dasilva was replaced after a knock to his ankle and all will be assessed back at the RHPC before the team is selected for Saturday’s trip to the Weston Homes Stadium.
