Frank Fielding revealed his match-winning save to help Bristol City secure back-to-back victories was made all the sweeter coming against his former club.
Aaron Wilbraham’s 14th minute header was enough to see off an impressive Rochdale side at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
Fielding kept a lucky 13th clean sheet of the league campaign, thanks in no small part to a stunning second-half stop to keep out Peter Vincenti’s goalbound header with his outstretched left hand.
The City number one was twice loaned to Spotland by Blackburn Rovers in his youth and played a part in ending the club’s 41-year wait for a promotion in 2009/10.
“It was a great header to be fair to him but I’ve just reacted and thankfully kept it out. That’s my job at the end of the day and we’re all delighted,” said Fielding of the three points.
“They’re a very difficult team [to play against]. You could see that they’re a very dangerous young side and my old team as well, so it feels even better.
“It’s not too far from where I’m from back home and I’ve got some good mates who are still there.
“I know the kitman and obviously the manager is back in his second spell, so I’ve got fond memories of Rochdale.”
The goalkeeper admitted it was crucial for City to respond in the right manner following the surprise 3-2 defeat at Colchester United seven days prior in which the U’s led 3-0 inside 26 minutes.
“After the disappointment of last weekend, to bounce back with two wins is great,” Fielding added.
“It’s lovely keeping clean sheets but getting the win and keeping our momentum going is massively important.
“The boys worked their socks off and it’s a squad game, so having people ready to come on at this time of the season is massive. I thought the boys who came on today were brilliant.”
