Everyone at Bristol City Football Club was saddened to learn of the passing of former Academy player Darren Hawkins at the age of 33.
The father of four was a product of the club’s youth setup, springing on to the scene in 2003 when he fired a hat-trick in a pre-season friendly with West Wiltshire XI.
Hawkins left Ashton Gate without making a first team appearance, whilst enjoying loan spells at Bath City and Tamworth.
He later featured for Weston-super-Mare and Mangotsfield United.
A spokesman for the Gloucestershire FA said Darren Hawkins was a ‘talented footballer’ and his death was ‘such a loss to life and the beautiful game’.
Supporters plan to hold a minute’s applause for Hawkins in the 33rd minute of Saturday’s match with Cardiff City.
Chris Vui and Charles Piutau were in action in the opening round of the Pacific Nations Cup, with Tonga beaten by Fiji and Samoa edging out Australia A.
