Korey Smith has explained why City’s players have pulled together to refund the supporters who made the 400-mile round trip to Preston North End on Tuesday night.
Smith captained Lee Johnson’s team at Deepdale as City suffered their heaviest defeat for five and a half years – a 5-0 reverse in Lancashire.
Now the players have decided to cover the cost of those who bought a ticket by way of an apology.
“Obviously we were absolutely gutted and there were some strong words exchanged at the end of the game,” Smith told Bristol City Player HD.
“I think we reacted in the same way as everyone else connected with the club.
“We know it was a poor performance and we feel they deserve their well-earned money back.
“We had 312 fans who went all that way on a Tuesday night. They had work the next morning and we didn’t send them home in a good mood.
“We’re not happy about that, so the players are going to refund the price of their tickets.”
The 2014/15 promotion winner is calling for togetherness as City return to home soil for the first time in three weeks against Wolves on Saturday (3pm).
“Even after such a poor performance, the fans were amazing on Tuesday and it’s absolutely crucial that we have that support,” he added.
“They still clapped us off the pitch and I think they know that we have to stick together now. They’re going to be absolutely massive for us in these remaining games.”
A crowd in excess of 20,000 is expected for the match against Wolves, which is pay on the day for home supporters. Call 0117 963 0600 or go online to secure your seat.
